In a recent testimony during the Federal Trade
Commission's (FTC) antitrust trial against Meta Platforms, Inc., Instagram CEO
Adam Mosseri highlighted the intense competition posed by TikTok, describing it
as a significant threat to Instagram's user engagement and growth.
Mosseri revealed that upon taking over Instagram in
2018, the platform experienced a notable decline in user engagement, with
internal estimates attributing approximately 23% of the U.S. usage drop in 2019
directly to TikTok's rapid ascent. Emphasizing the urgency of adaptation in the
tech industry, Mosseri stated, "You're either growing, or you're slowly
dying
To counteract this decline, Instagram invested heavily
in developing features like Reels, aiming to compete with TikTok's short-form
video content. These efforts included significant financial incentives for
content creators, with Mosseri noting that the platform has spent
"hundreds of millions, maybe a billion or two" dollars to attract and
support creators.
Despite these initiatives, Mosseri acknowledged that
Instagram's shift towards entertainment content has led to a decrease in
friend-focused interactions, a core aspect of the platform's original identity.
He maintained, however, that fostering connections among friends remains
essential to Instagram's mission.
The FTC's lawsuit alleges that Meta's acquisitions of
Instagram and WhatsApp were anti-competitive moves to maintain dominance in the
personal social networking market. Mosseri's testimony, highlighting the
competitive pressures from platforms like TikTok, serves as part of Meta's
defense against these allegations.
As the trial continues, Mosseri's insights shed light
on the challenges Instagram faces in a rapidly evolving social media landscape
and the strategic decisions undertaken to remain competitive.
