Iran has warned the United States that its armed
forces are prepared to respond with what it described as “more severe, crushing
and unpredictable” attacks following President Donald Trump’s threat to destroy
the Islamic Republic.
The warning came after Trump, during his address to
the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, said he faced a
choice between reaching a deal with Tehran and taking further military action
against Iran.
Trump said he was considering whether to allow Iran to
rebuild through a negotiated agreement or “annihilate the Islamic Republic” if
the conflict could not be resolved.
In response, Iran’s Armed Forces General Staff issued
a statement rejecting Trump’s remarks and saying the military remained prepared
to respond to any further aggression.
The statement warned that Iran could deliver “more
severe, crushing and unpredictable blows” against those it considers
aggressors, including the United States and Israel.
Iranian officials also dismissed Trump’s comments as
rhetoric that would not change the military and strategic calculations
surrounding the conflict.
Despite the increasingly strong statements from both
sides, diplomatic efforts have continued. Trump said after his UN address that
US and Iranian representatives had held what he described as a “very good
meeting” and indicated that another round of discussions could take place soon.
The exchanges come as the conflict between Washington
and Tehran continues, with negotiations focusing on ending the hostilities and
addressing disagreements over Iran’s nuclear programme and the Strait of
Hormuz.
The latest developments have therefore combined
renewed military threats with ongoing diplomatic contacts aimed at finding a
possible resolution to the crisis.
