Italian fashion icon Giorgio Armani has died at the
age of 91, his company announced on Thursday, marking the end of an era in
global fashion.
In a statement posted on Instagram, the Armani Group
wrote: “With infinite condolences, the Armani Group announces the passing of
its inventor, founder and tireless engine: Giorgio Armani. Mr Armani, as he was
respectfully called by employees and collaborators, passed away peacefully,
surrounded by his loved ones.”
The group added that Armani worked tirelessly until
his final days, devoting himself to new collections and ongoing projects that
reflected his hallmark vision of clarity, precision and timeless elegance.
Born in Piacenza in 1934, Armani initially studied
medicine before turning to design, where he went on to transform global fashion
with his minimalist yet sophisticated aesthetic. He launched his fashion house
in Milan in 1975, introducing a new standard of understated tailoring that
revolutionised both men’s and women’s fashion.
Over the decades, his empire grew beyond clothing into
perfumes, accessories, interior design, music, sports sponsorships, restaurants
and luxury hotels. Armani became synonymous with red-carpet glamour, famously
dressing Richard Gere in American Gigolo and countless Hollywood stars
at the Oscars, Cannes and beyond.
Renowned for clean lines and neutral palettes,
Armani’s work epitomised effortless elegance. Unlike many of his
contemporaries, he remained fiercely independent, refusing corporate buyouts
and keeping his fashion house under private control.
Beyond the runway, Armani supported humanitarian
causes in health and education and was a passionate advocate for Italian
craftsmanship on the world stage.
Tributes from across the fashion industry have hailed
him as a visionary who reshaped style for generations.
