Los Angeles, USA
— Popular late-night host Jimmy Kimmel has returned to the airwaves
after a turbulent week that saw his show briefly pulled from dozens of local
ABC affiliates owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group and Nexstar Media
Group.
The suspension followed backlash over remarks Kimmel
made after the killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. Both
Sinclair and Nexstar initially stopped airing Jimmy Kimmel Live!,
triggering public outcry over free speech and censorship.
Public Pressure Forces Reversal
Disney-owned ABC initially halted production of
the show last week. But after widespread criticism over press freedom, the
network reversed its decision. Kimmel’s return on Tuesday drew a surge in
ratings, despite the fact that nearly a quarter of the U.S. audience
remained unable to watch due to lingering blackouts.
On Friday, Sinclair announced it would immediately
resume airing the program, emphasizing that its actions were aimed at ensuring
“accurate and engaging” content while still honoring community interests.
Nexstar also reaffirmed its commitment to First Amendment protections
while maintaining editorial independence.
FCC and White House Tensions
The controversy escalated after FCC Chairman
Brendan Carr suggested broadcasters risked license scrutiny for carrying
Kimmel’s program. Former President Donald Trump, a frequent target of
late-night satire, has long pressured networks to silence comedians who
criticize him, calling their mockery “illegal.”
In response, Sinclair stressed its decision was made independently
of government pressure, arguing that defending free speech also includes
the discretion not to air certain programs.
Kimmel Fires Back
On his comeback episode, Kimmel addressed the
controversy head-on, blasting what he described as an “anti-American attempt
to silence a comedian.”
“The president of the United States made it very clear
he wants to see me and the hundreds of people who work here fired from our
jobs,” Kimmel said.
“Our leader celebrates Americans losing their livelihoods because he can’t take
a joke.”
