A Kano State High Court has sentenced two men, Aliyu
Hussaini and Amir Zakariyya, to death by hanging for the killing of
a newly married groom, Yazid Haruna.
The convicts, who reside in Sheka Sabuwar Abuja
Quarters and Unguwar Malam Quarters in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano
State, were found guilty of conspiracy, armed robbery, and culpable homicide.
Prosecuting counsel, Mr. Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, told
the court that the crime occurred in the early hours of June 11, 2025, at Sheka
Sabuwar Abuja Quarters in Kano. He said that at about 2:47 a.m., the defendants
conspired and armed themselves with long knives and a machete before attacking
the victim.
According to the prosecution, the men robbed Haruna of
two mobile phones and N19,500 before fatally stabbing him. The victim sustained
multiple injuries that ultimately led to his death.
The prosecution presented three witnesses and tendered
medical reports to support its case. However, the defendants denied the
allegations.
The offences were said to contravene Sections 97(1),
298(c), and 221(a) of the Penal Code Laws of Kano State.
Defence counsel, Mr. Haruna Saleh-Zakariyya, called
the accused persons to testify on their own behalf and pleaded with the court
for leniency.
In her judgment delivered on Tuesday, March 3, 2026,
Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond
reasonable doubt. She described the actions of the convicts as inhuman and
expressed concern over the growing cases of phone-related robberies in the
state.
The court sentenced each defendant to one year
imprisonment for conspiracy and life imprisonment for armed robbery. They were
further sentenced to death by hanging for culpable homicide.
The court also recalled that on October 20, 2025, the
same convicts had previously been sentenced to death by hanging by another Kano
State High Court for killing a lecturer after robbing him of his mobile phone.
