Emboldened by his near win in the 2023 Ogun State
gubernatorial election, Oladipupo Adebutu, the popular politician simply known
as Ladi Adebutu, has concluded a major plan to make another attempt at
actualizing his ambition.
The face of the opposition People’s Democratic Party
(PDP) in Ogun State lost the last general election by a margin of less than
14,000 votes—a loss that he continues to dispute—which paved the way for the
re-election of Governor Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Abiodun, who leaves office in 2027, is from the same
area—Iperu, Ogun East—as Adebutu.
This development threatens Adebutu’s gubernatorial
ambition in the face of an informal arrangement for power to shift to another
political zone.
Although there are three political zones in Ogun
State, only two divisions—Ogun East and Ogun Central—have shared the
gubernatorial seat since the state’s creation, to the exclusion of the low-vote
area, Ogun West, which continues to hamper its chances due to its failure to
provide a united front.
In order to leverage this situation, sources say
Adebutu has established a political foothold in Ogun Central.
“His ancestry, through his mother’s side, has been
traced to a village in Odeda and established to be correct,” sources say.
Followers of Ogun politics reveal this gives him a
strong chance to posture himself as a gubernatorial candidate from Ogun Central
ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election.
Those in the know add that groundwork towards
actualizing this positioning is already underway.
Adebutu, the son of the immensely wealthy lotto king
Kessington Adebutu, is the owner of the most formidable political structure in
Ogun State PDP and one of the strongest in the entire state.
Aside from coming from wealth, the politician owns
several money-spinning businesses, including one of the largest pig farms in
the country.
