The Lagos State Police Command has arrested Adamu
Abdullahi, a middle-aged scrap iron dealer, for orchestrating his own
kidnapping in an attempt to extort N1.5 million from his employer.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani
Fatai, disclosed that the case began on May 19 when a man named Abubakar
reported at the local police station that his brother, Abdullahi, was missing.
During the investigation, a video surfaced showing
Abdullahi supposedly being beaten with planks. In the footage, his alleged
captors threatened him with death unless his employer paid a ransom of N1.5
million.
However, police detectives spotted several
inconsistencies upon closely analyzing the video and conducting further
investigations. Notably, Abdullahi showed no visible signs of physical assault
after his return home. Subjected to further interrogation, he eventually
confessed that the kidnapping was completely staged.
Abdullahi revealed he collaborated with 35-year-old
Adelowo Olalekan Akorede, 39-year-old Yusuf Lukman, and another accomplice who
is currently on the run. Police investigations showed that the syndicate
intended to defraud Abdullahi’s employer, Lawal Abubakar, who regularly
entrusted him with funds for scrap iron business transactions.
The police boss added that Abdullahi also admitted to
diverting an additional N490,000 that his employer had previously handed over
for business purposes.
Detectives have since recovered the stolen N490,000
and located the workshop where the fake kidnapping video was filmed. The
Commissioner of Police stated that efforts are currently ongoing to track down
and apprehend the fleeing accomplice.
