The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to roll out an electric-powered water transportation initiative as part of efforts to ease traffic congestion and promote sustainable mobility across the state.

Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced on Monday that the scheme—branded the Omi Eko Project—will introduce 72 electric vessels and 25 new jetties, all powered by clean energy. The project is scheduled to commence in October 2025.

“In Lagos State, we are starting a project called the Omi Eko Project, where we will be bringing over 72 electric boats that will ply the waterways,” Osiyemi said. “That will open up our waterways for transportation, directly reduce congestion on the roads, and reassure citizens of the safety of this mode of travel.”

Tackling Lagos’ Traffic Woes

Although nearly 60% of Lagos is covered by water—earning it the moniker City of Aquatic Splendour—the waterways remain grossly underutilized. Past attempts to develop marine transport, including Uber Boat and Gokada Boat services, struggled to gain traction.

Osiyemi noted that public hesitation stems largely from safety concerns, which the Omi Eko project aims to address through modern, comfortable, and well-regulated electric vessels. He stressed that water journeys are significantly faster and safer than commuting by road.

Sustainability at the Core

Highlighting the project’s environmental and economic benefits, Osiyemi said the switch to electric boats will drastically cut operational costs while reducing the state’s carbon emissions footprint.

“Seventy percent of transportation operational cost is fossil fuel. Electricity will reduce that tremendously and directly impact fares, making water transport more affordable and accessible,” he explained.

The commissioner further revealed that the government will embark on large-scale channelisation and dredging to ensure waterways are navigable for the vessels.

A Step Toward Intermodal Transport

The Omi Eko Project forms part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s broader intermodal transport strategy, which integrates road, rail, and water systems.

“This project is about sustainability, affordability, and safety,” Osiyemi said. “It reflects Mr. Governor’s vision to provide world-class transportation options that reduce traffic, open up economic opportunities, and enhance the quality of life for Lagos residents.”
