Liverpool, Anfield – February 28, 2026:
Liverpool moved closer to securing a top-five finish and a Champions League
spot next season with a 5–2 victory over West Ham United at Anfield. Three
first-half goals from Hugo Ekitike, Virgil van Dijk, and Alexis Mac Allister,
all from set-pieces, set the tone for the match, giving the Reds an early
advantage.
Dutch duo Cody Gakpo and Jeremie Frimpong
added further goals in the second half, extending Liverpool’s lead despite a
performance described as far from convincing. Tomas Soucek and Valentin
Castellanos pulled two goals back for the Hammers, but West Ham remain two
points adrift of safety, struggling in the Premier League relegation
battle.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot celebrated the
victory, highlighting the importance of maintaining consistency in pursuit of a
top-five finish, which would likely guarantee Champions League football next
season.
Meanwhile, Burnley suffered another blow in their
survival hopes, losing 4–3 at home to Brentford in a dramatic encounter at
Turf Moor. Brentford raced to a 3–0 lead inside 34 minutes through Mikkel
Damsgaard, Igor Thiago, and Kevin Schade. Burnley fought back with goals
from Michael Kayode (own goal), Jaidon Anthony, and Zian Flemming, only
to see Damsgaard score a stoppage-time winner. A VAR review also denied
Burnley a 98th-minute equaliser due to handball, cementing their narrow defeat.
Everton maintained their European hopes
with a 3–2 victory at Newcastle, overcoming the Magpies
in a seesaw contest. Jarrod Branthwaite, Beto, and Thierno Barry each
put the Toffees ahead at different stages, while Newcastle struggled to gain
control at home. Despite difficulties adjusting to Hill Dickinson Stadium,
Everton climbed to eighth place, demonstrating one of the strongest road
records in the league this season.
Elsewhere, Bournemouth extended their unbeaten
league run to eight games, salvaging a 1–1 draw against Sunderland. Evanilson
equalised after Eliezer Mayenda had given the Black Cats the lead,
ensuring Bournemouth’s steady rise up the table continues.
The Premier League drama continues to intensify as
teams battle for survival, European qualification, and top-five positions ahead
of the season’s final months. With thrilling encounters, late goals, and VAR
controversies, the league remains as unpredictable and competitive as ever.
