A man accused of abusing a minor believed to be his
house help has been arrested in Makurdi, Benue State, following intervention by
residents and a human rights advocate.
The incident reportedly drew attention after locals
confronted the suspect over alleged mistreatment of the child.
Allegations of Abuse
According to human rights activist Zege Orkwande, the
suspect had brought the girl from Konshisha Local Government Area and was
allegedly subjecting her to harsh treatment.
He also claimed that the suspect was physically
abusive toward his wife whenever she challenged his actions.
Community Intervention
Residents in the area reportedly intervened after
witnessing the alleged abuse, leading to the suspect being apprehended before
authorities were contacted.
Suspect Handed Over to Authorities
The suspect has been handed over to the National
Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in Benue State
for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Call to End Child Abuse
Orkwande condemned the incident, calling for urgent
action to address cases of child abuse in the state.
He emphasized the psychological and physical impact
such treatment can have on victims, urging authorities and communities to take
stronger measures to protect vulnerable children.
