Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency
have arrested a church leader and his wife after discovering a significant
quantity of illicit drugs hidden inside their vehicle along the Seme border
corridor in Lagos State.
The suspects, identified as Pastor Afolabi Hodonu, who
oversees a parish of the Celestial Church of Christ in the Agonvi Sea Beach
area of Badagry, and his wife, Success Hodonu, were reportedly intercepted
during a routine stop-and-search operation.
According to a statement released by the agency’s
spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the arrest took place on April 2 at the Gbaji
checkpoint. During the inspection, officers uncovered about 11 kilograms of
skunk—a strain of cannabis—concealed within hidden compartments of the couple’s
vehicle.
Authorities explained that the operation was part of
ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking activities along the Seme border, a
route often used for smuggling illegal substances into Lagos and other parts of
the country.
Further details from the agency revealed that the
arrest of the pastor and his wife was linked to an earlier incident at the same
checkpoint. On March 30, operatives had apprehended another suspect, Sunday
Samuel, who allegedly posed as a security agent while transporting
approximately 24.5 kilograms of skunk from the border area toward Lagos.
The NDLEA noted that investigations are ongoing to
determine the extent of the suspects’ involvement and whether they are part of
a larger drug distribution network operating within the region.
