Popular American rapper Nicki Minaj is scheduled to
speak at a United Nations event in New York on Tuesday, November 18, where she
will address claims of a Christian genocide in Nigeria.
Minaj will appear alongside Michael Waltz, the United
States ambassador to the UN, and Alex Bruesewitz, an adviser to U.S. President
Donald Trump and the organiser of the event. The panel is expected to discuss
the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria, as well as the measures the
Trump administration says it is taking to combat the issue.
Christian organisations in Nigeria—including the
Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Pentecostal Fellowship of
Nigeria (PFN)—have previously described the attacks on Christian communities as
“genocide.”
Ahead of the event, top U.S. officials praised Minaj
for using her global platform to raise awareness.
“@NICKIMINAJ is not only arguably the greatest female
recording artist, but also a principled individual who refuses to remain silent
in the face of injustice,” Waltz said. “I’m grateful she’s leveraging her
massive platform to spotlight the atrocities against Christians in Nigeria, and
I look forward to standing with her as we discuss the steps the President and
his administration are taking to end the persecution of our Christian brothers
and sisters.”
Minaj expressed gratitude for the opportunity, noting
that the mission aligns with her values and faith.
“I am so grateful to be entrusted with an opportunity
of this magnitude. I do not take it for granted,” she said. “The Barbz and I
will never stand down in the face of injustice. We’ve been given our influence
by God. There must be a bigger purpose.”
