Nicki Minaj has filed a lawsuit against Nigerian
influencer Dr Penking over alleged cyberbullying and copyright
infringement.
The controversy erupted on Saturday after Dr Penking
shared an old video of the rapper on X, captioning it: “Nicki Minaj should
understand that she has gotten old and retire.”
In response, Minaj questioned whether Dr Penking had
obtained permission to post the clip and accused him of using it to “harass”
her. She confirmed that he had been added to her legal action.
“Do you have permission to use this video that I
filmed years ago to harass me on this or any platform? You’ve just been added
to the suit,” she wrote in a now-deleted post.
Dr Penking reacted by stating that he and his team
were prepared to face the lawsuit. He defended his post as an exercise of free
speech and insisted it was not intended to harass the rapper.
“Tell Nicki Minaj that myself and my team are ready
and eagerly anticipating her papers. Freedom of speech and expression is
supreme in all constitutions in the world and I have the right to express my
opinion at all times. Is she old? Yes, she is 43,” he said.
He further added, “There is nothing harassing about
this. It is publicly accessible information on Wikipedia. Should she retire? I
think she should. That’s my personal opinion and I stand by it. You can agree
or disagree. I will not be bullied or intimidated by Nicki Minaj or any other
‘celebrity.’”
The case highlights the ongoing debate over freedom of
expression online and the boundaries of copyright when sharing publicly
accessible content.
