Nigeria was thrown into darkness on Wednesday after the country’s national electricity grid collapsed, the latest in a string of recurring failures.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed the incident in a public notice posted on its official X handle on September 10, 2025.

According to AEDC, the blackout began at 11:23 a.m. following a sudden loss of supply from the national grid.

“Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 am today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas,” the statement read.

AEDC said efforts are underway, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, to restore supply once the grid stabilizes. The company also urged customers to be patient and shared its contact lines for inquiries and updates: 08039070070 (calls), 08152141414, and 08152151515 (WhatsApp).

Nigerians React Online

The collapse quickly sparked outrage online, with “National Grid” becoming the number one trending topic on X (formerly Twitter) by mid-afternoon.

Many Nigerians expressed frustration at the recurring instability of the country’s power sector, while others speculated about the cause. As of 2 p.m., the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had yet to issue an official statement.

Background: A Recurring Problem

This is not the first time Nigeria has been plunged into nationwide darkness.

  • In March 2025, a similar grid collapse that left large parts of the country without power.
  • According to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the grid recorded several partial or total collapses in 2024, often linked to inadequate generation, transmission bottlenecks, and technical faults.
  • Despite repeated assurances from government and power sector stakeholders, the problem persists, crippling businesses, industries, and households across the country.
