The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has
forecast a combination of sunshine, cloud cover, and thunderstorms across
different parts of the country from Saturday through Monday, with several
states expected to experience rainfall.
In its weather outlook issued on Friday in Abuja, the
agency said northern Nigeria will experience predominantly sunny weather on
Saturday, with patches of cloud expected across the region. However, isolated
thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rainfall are forecast over parts
of Taraba State later in the day.
For the North Central region, NiMet predicted cloudy
skies with intervals of sunshine throughout Saturday.
In the South, the agency forecast cloudy conditions
with sunny spells and a chance of light thunderstorms during the day in parts
of Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states. It also predicted
moderate thunderstorms later in the day across Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo,
Delta, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom
states.
On Sunday, NiMet said the northern states will
continue to experience mostly sunny weather with patches of cloud, while
isolated thunderstorms with light to moderate rainfall are expected over parts
of Taraba State in the afternoon and evening.
The North Central region is expected to remain cloudy
with periods of sunshine throughout the day.
For southern Nigeria, the agency forecast cloudy
conditions with sunny intervals and moderate thunderstorms later in the day
over parts of Ondo, Osun, Ogun, Lagos, Imo, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Cross
River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, Edo, and Delta states.
By Monday, NiMet said the northern region will
continue to record sunny skies with few clouds, while the North Central states
will experience cloudy weather interspersed with sunshine.
In the South, moderate thunderstorms are expected over
parts of Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers states.
The agency advised residents in areas likely to
experience thunderstorms to take necessary safety precautions, warning that
strong winds could precede rainfall. It urged the public to secure loose
objects, avoid driving during heavy downpours, disconnect electrical appliances
from power sources during storms, and stay away from tall trees to reduce the
risk of injury from falling branches.
NiMet also advised airline operators to obtain
airport-specific weather reports to support safe flight planning and
operations.
In addition, the agency warned that temperatures are
expected to remain high during the forecast period and encouraged Nigerians to
wear light, breathable clothing, stay in well-ventilated environments, and
drink plenty of water to avoid heat-related illnesses.
