The Anambra State Police Command has launched a
manhunt for a teacher accused of fatally flogging a 12-year-old student at a
school in Adazi-Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer,
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command received a report of the incident on July
16, prompting officers attached to the Neni Division to immediately respond.
According to Ikenga, the victim was rushed to a
hospital for emergency treatment but was confirmed dead by a medical doctor
while receiving care.
He disclosed that the child's body has been deposited
in the hospital morgue for preservation and an autopsy, while photographs taken
during the preliminary investigation revealed visible marks of violence on
different parts of the body.
The police spokesperson said investigations are
ongoing and assured the public that every effort is being made to apprehend the
fleeing suspect and ensure that all those found responsible are brought to
justice.
He also assured the bereaved family and residents that
the command would carry out a thorough, diligent, and transparent investigation
into the incident.
The police appealed to members of the public with
credible information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect to report to
the nearest police station or contact the Anambra State Police Command through
its emergency line.
