Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential
candidate, Peter Obi, has said Nigeria is not under military rule and
that political influence should be earned through good governance, not
coercion.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Wednesday,
Obi dismissed suggestions that the South-East could be “captured”
politically, following the recent defections of Enugu State Governor Peter
Mbah and Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri to the All
Progressives Congress (APC).
“We are not in a military time when you capture
people,” Obi said. “You are a leader; you do the right things for people to
follow you. So, I don’t think anybody is capturing anywhere.”
While describing Governor Mbah as a good friend,
Obi noted that every politician makes decisions based on personal convictions
and political calculations.
He also urged public officials to focus on policies
that directly improve citizens’ welfare, stressing that performance, not
political realignment, earns true loyalty from the people.
“The government needs to do more if it wants the
people to support it,” he added.
