India has been selected to host the 2030
Commonwealth Games, marking the second time in 20 years the event will be
held in the world’s most populous nation.
The western city of Ahmedabad was chosen ahead
of Abuja, Nigeria, following an evaluation by the Commonwealth Sport
commission. The decision is expected to be ratified at the organisation’s General
Assembly in Glasgow on November 26.
Ahmedabad, home to over five million people, boasts
the Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest sporting arena with a
132,000 capacity, which hosted the 2023 Cricket World Cup final.
“We see the 2030 Games as a powerful opportunity to
inspire our youth, strengthen international partnerships, and contribute to a
shared future across the Commonwealth,” said Dr. P. T. Usha, President
of the Commonwealth Games Association of India.
The Games will return to India for the first time
since Delhi 2010. It is also the second time Abuja has missed out
on hosting the event, after losing the bid for the 2014 Games to Glasgow.
