An Ogun State governorship aspirant, Sarafa-Yusuf, has
declared her intention to succeed Governor Dapo Abiodun in 2027, pledging what
she described as a “managed transition option” anchored on stability, unity,
and institutional balance.
In an open letter dated February 26, 2026, she said
her decision followed “deep reflection and wide consultation,” noting that she
chose to make her declaration public in order to remain focused on
responsibility rather than political drama.
“I am presenting myself as the safest option. I bring
experience working with government institutions and processes, broad appeal and
acceptance across different parts of Ogun State, and calm under pressure,” she
wrote.
Continuity and Party Unity
Sarafa-Yusuf emphasised her cordial relationship with
the outgoing governor, describing him as the leader of the party and
underscoring the importance of continuity.
“I have maintained a cordial and respectful
relationship with the outgoing governor. This is because I believe that
continuity matters. Order matters. Transitions matter,” she stated.
Addressing zoning debates — particularly agitations
from Ogun West — she cautioned against allowing grievances to destabilise the
state.
“Our task is not to choose sides emotionally; it is to
prevent a scenario where zoning becomes a blunt instrument that destabilises
the entire state. What Ogun needs is inclusion without escalation,” she added.
Experience and Gender Milestone
The aspirant recalled her previous attempt to secure
her party’s ticket in 2022, saying she accepted the outcome without causing
division within party ranks.
“I did not fracture the system. I accepted the
outcome, preserved relationships, and stayed engaged,” she wrote.
On the issue of gender representation, she
acknowledged that Nigeria has never elected a female governor, describing the
prospect as significant. However, she stressed that her ambition is driven by
competence rather than symbolism.
“My aspiration is not about symbolism, but about
capacity and competence,” she said.
Development Agenda
If elected, Sarafa-Yusuf promised result-oriented
governance, consolidation of Ogun’s industrial strength, youth empowerment,
infrastructure modernisation, and improved trust between government and
citizens.
She expressed confidence that Ogun State — widely
regarded as one of Nigeria’s industrial hubs due to its strategic location and
proximity to Lagos — is ready for balanced and effective leadership.
Governor Abiodun, who hails from Ogun East, is
expected to complete his second term in May 2027, setting the stage for a
competitive succession race.
