Elder Paul Bassey, Chairman of Akwa United FC and Vice
President 2 of the Africa Clubs Association, has been nominated for a
Commissioner position in Akwa Ibom State. His name was included in the list of
nominees submitted to the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on Tuesday,
February 11, 2025.
A highly respected sports administrator, Bassey is
widely expected to take charge of the Ministry of Sports, succeeding Sir Monday
Uko.
With a career spanning decades, Bassey has left an
indelible mark on Nigerian and African sports. He was part of Nigeria’s
delegation to the 2004 Athens Olympics and was honored with the prestigious CAF
Golden Jubilee Award in 2007 for his contributions to sports journalism,
football development, and administration. As the publisher of Todaysports,
one of Nigeria’s leading sports newspapers, he has played a pivotal role in
shaping sports discourse in the country.
Under his leadership, Akwa United FC secured major
achievements, including the NPFL title in 2021, multiple Federation Cup
victories, and continental qualifications. His dedication to football
development has earned him national and international recognition.
Beyond sports, Bassey is a committed Elder in the
Apostolic Church. His nomination has been met with widespread approval, with
many describing him as the ideal choice to lead the state’s sports ministry.
