An inspector of police has been killed following an ambush on a patrol team by armed assailants in an Oyo State community.

The incident, which occurred over the weekend, threw the area into tension as residents and security operatives raised concerns over the growing threat of violent attacks.

It was gathered that the police patrol team was on routine security duty when it was suddenly waylaid by gunmen, who opened fire on the officers.

During the exchange of gunfire, the inspector sustained fatal injuries and later died. Other members of the patrol team were also wounded in the attack and were rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Their current conditions were not immediately disclosed.

The identity of the slain officer has not yet been released, pending notification of his family by police authorities.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, SP Olayinka Ayanlade, said the command had launched a manhunt for the attackers.

According to him, the Commissioner of Police ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation into the attack with the aim of apprehending those responsible.

“There was an attack on police operatives during which an inspector, while courageously repelling the attack, paid the supreme price in the line of duty,” Ayanlade said.

“Immediately the information was received, the Commissioner of Police ordered a manhunt and a comprehensive investigation. Preliminary findings indicate that some of the attackers sustained bullet injuries, and operatives are currently on their trail,” he added.

The police spokesperson assured residents that adequate security measures were being put in place to prevent further attacks and to protect lives and property across the state.

He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by reporting anyone with gunshot wounds, suspicious medical requests, or unfamiliar individuals seeking refuge within their communities.
