The Nigeria Police Force in Kogi State has initiated a
large-scale search-and-rescue operation following a kidnapping incident along
the Ayere–Kabba Road in Kabba Local Government Area.
According to a statement by Police Public Relations
Officer ASP Saliu Afusat, the attack occurred around 8:30 p.m. on April 13,
2026, when armed men intercepted a commercial Toyota Hiace bus traveling from
Lagos to Abuja.
Security forces responded swiftly to the situation,
successfully rescuing one passenger, while the vehicle involved has been
recovered and taken into police custody for forensic analysis.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi,
confirmed that seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the
incident. He added that those in custody are currently assisting the State
Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) with ongoing investigations.
Authorities said joint teams comprising police,
military personnel, and other security agencies are continuing intensive
bush-combing operations in a bid to rescue the remaining victims.
The Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the SCID, supported by
tactical teams, is actively leading the operation to ensure the safe release of
those still in captivity and to apprehend all those involved.
The command has urged relatives of the abducted
passengers to report to the SCID headquarters in Lokoja to aid identification
and support the investigation process.
Reaffirming its stance, the police warned criminal
elements to desist from such acts, emphasizing that offenders will face the
full force of the law, while assuring residents of their commitment to
protecting lives and property.
