Vatican City – The Vatican has announced that the funeral Mass for Pope Francis will take place on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square.

According to the Holy See Press Office, the Mass will be presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals. Concelebrating with him will be Patriarchs, Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, and priests from around the world.

The funeral will conclude with the Ultima commendatio and the Valedictio, traditional rites that mark the beginning of the Novemdiales — nine days of mourning and prayers for the repose of the late Pontiff’s soul.

Pope Francis’ body will lie in state in St. Peter’s Basilica beginning Wednesday, April 23. Earlier that morning, at 9:00 a.m., a solemn procession will accompany the Pope’s coffin from the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta to the Basilica.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, will lead the rite of translation. The procession is set to move through Santa Marta Square and the Square of the Roman Protomartyrs before entering St. Peter’s Square via the Arch of the Bells and proceeding through the Basilica’s central door.

At the Altar of the Confession, Cardinal Farrell will preside over a Liturgy of the Word, after which members of the public will be allowed to pay their final respects.

Following Saturday’s funeral, the late Pope’s body will be transferred to the Basilica of St. Mary Major for entombment.
