Prince William has become wealthier than his father, King Charles III, following the release of new financial accounts showing that the Prince of Wales now controls assets valued at an estimated £1.2 billion through the Duchy of Cornwall.

The latest Sovereign Grant accounts reveal that William inherited the Duchy of Cornwall after becoming heir to the British throne in 2022. The private estate generated a personal income of £21.6 million for the Prince of Wales during the 2025–26 financial year.

The accounts also show that William has paid more than £20 million in taxes since assuming the title. During the 2024–25 financial year alone, he paid £7.76 million in income and capital gains tax, following tax payments of £8.34 million in the previous year.

By comparison, King Charles III's personal fortune was recently estimated at £640 million in the latest Sunday Times Rich List, representing an increase of £30 million from the previous year.

The Sovereign Grant is the annual funding provided by the UK Treasury to support the official duties of the Royal Household. In recent years, both King Charles and Prince William have voluntarily disclosed details of their private tax payments as part of efforts to increase transparency surrounding royal finances.

The newly published accounts also revealed that Prince William has decided to forgo the estimated £1.5 million in annual rental income generated by the former Dartmoor Prison.

Meanwhile, Buckingham Palace confirmed this week that King Charles and Queen Camilla will not relocate to Buckingham Palace after its £370 million refurbishment is completed next year.

Instead, Clarence House will remain the King's official London residence for the rest of his reign, while Buckingham Palace will continue to serve as the monarchy's administrative headquarters and the venue for official royal engagements.

"His Majesty retains huge affection for Buckingham Palace and a deep respect for its role in royal and public life," a palace spokesperson said. "It will be a buzzing hive of royal activity in every other way."

Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, were recently seen attending Royal Ascot in Berkshire, where they greeted members of the public after arriving by carriage.
