Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA
Champions League title after overcoming Arsenal in a dramatic final that was
ultimately decided by a penalty shootout.
The French champions displayed remarkable resilience,
recovering from an early setback before holding their nerve to secure another
European crown following an intense contest at the Puskás Arena in Budapest.
Arsenal made a dream start to the final when Kai
Havertz capitalised on a defensive mistake to open the scoring in the sixth
minute. The German forward burst into the penalty area and fired a powerful
shot past PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov to give the Gunners an early advantage.
The goal initially stunned the defending champions,
but PSG gradually settled into the game and began asserting control through the
creativity of Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué and Vitinha.
Despite enjoying the majority of possession and
creating several opportunities, PSG struggled to find a way past Arsenal’s
organised defence during the first half. Fabian Ruiz came closest for the
Parisians, while Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya was rarely called into serious
action as the London side carried a 1-0 lead into the break.
The momentum shifted in PSG’s favour after halftime as
the French side increased the pressure in search of an equaliser.
Their breakthrough arrived in the 65th minute when a
VAR review awarded PSG a penalty following a foul by Cristhian Mosquera inside
the box. Dembélé stepped up and calmly converted the spot-kick, sending Raya
the wrong way and levelling the score at 1-1.
The equaliser transformed the match into a thrilling
battle. PSG pushed aggressively for a winner, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia
striking the post and Vitinha narrowly missing with a powerful effort from
distance.
Arsenal remained dangerous on the counterattack and
introduced Viktor Gyökeres, Gabriel Martinelli and Eberechi Eze as manager
Mikel Arteta searched for a decisive goal.
Neither side could find a breakthrough in normal time,
forcing the final into extra time.
The additional 30 minutes produced few clear-cut
chances as fatigue began to affect both teams. Arsenal came closest to
snatching victory when Martin Zubimendi saw a late effort brilliantly blocked
by a PSG defender.
With the score still level after 120 minutes, the
destination of the Champions League trophy was left to a penalty shootout.
The shootout began evenly, with Gonçalo Ramos and
Désiré Doué converting for PSG, while Gyökeres and Declan Rice responded for
Arsenal.
PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov then emerged as a key
figure, saving Eberechi Eze’s penalty. Although David Raya briefly reignited
Arsenal’s hopes by denying Nuno Mendes, PSG maintained their composure.
Achraf Hakimi converted PSG’s next penalty before
Martinelli kept Arsenal alive with a successful effort.
The decisive moment came when Lucas Beraldo
confidently scored PSG’s final penalty, leaving Arsenal defender Gabriel
needing to score to extend the shootout.
Gabriel failed to convert, triggering jubilant
celebrations among PSG players, coaching staff and supporters as the French
giants secured another Champions League title.
The victory not only completed a successful title
defence but also reinforced PSG’s position among Europe’s elite clubs, capping
off another memorable campaign under manager Luis Enrique.
