As many Nigerians celebrated
Valentine’s Day yesterday, February 14th, a group of people in Lagos Island
were seen in a viral video, queuing for bread. The narrator in the video could
be heard saying that the price of bread at the location was N100. The group
turned roundly as men at the location were seen flogging those who attempted to
jump the queue.
The Governor of Lagos State,
Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday splashed N750 million on 15,000 thousand Lagos
traders as part of the Lagos Market Trader Money.
The governor launched the
Lagos Market Trader Money initiative in Ikeja, with beneficiaries singing his
praises. Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the current economic hardship in the country,
saying the activation of such financial support would go along way to improve
the lives of the citizens and traders who occupy strategic position in the
State’s food distribution network. Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi
Tinubu, has said that the removal of fuel subsidy is for the future of Nigeria.
Senator Tinubu made the
comment during a 2- day visit to Kano, to commission a multipurpose hall named
after her at the Maryam Abacha American University. The First Lady arrived in
Kano State, on a presidential jet, along with her entourage, on Monday February
12th. She was received by the State’s governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, members of
his cabinet, and thousands of NNPP loyalists. Hundreds of people including
school children lined up the streets to also welcome the first lady to Kano.
The Ogun State Governor,
Dapo Abiodun, has announced a N5bn palliatives in all sectors of the state
economy to cushion the effects of the current socio-economic -hardship being
experienced by residents of the state and in the country. At a press briefing
in Abeokuta, the state capital, on Wednesday, the governor also approved food
palliatives for about 300,000 vulnerable households across the three Senatorial
districts of the state, and offset of outstanding deductions to state workers
to the tune of N500m monthly.
The governor further
announced N50, 000 support for about 27,000 Ogun State students in tertiary
institutions across the country, insurance package for 70,000 residents and
pregnant women, among other palliatives. The Presidential candidate of the
Labour Party, Peter Obi, has identified with nurses following a circular by the
Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, that applicants seeking the
verification of certificates to foreign nursing boards and councils, must
possess two-year post qualification experience. Peter Obi urged the council to
reverse their recent student condition for the nursing personnel working
overseas adding that nurses should not be denied global employment.
The National Transportation
Safety Board in the United States on Wednesday, released pictures of the site
of the fatal helicopter crash that led to the death of the Group CEO of Access
Holdings Plc. Dr Herbert Wigwe, his wife Doreen Wigwe, his son Chizi Wigwe, as
well as Abimbola Ogunbanjo, former group chairman of the Nigerian Exchange
Group Plc. The NTSB, says a preliminary report of the accident is expected
within 30 days, while a full NTSB investigation report will be released within
12 to 24 months.
Meanwhile, the Governor of
Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has said that his administration is
considering immortalizing Dr. Herbert Wigwe, for his contributions to the
development of the state. Dignitaries including Pastor Enoch Adeboye, Lagos
State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and former Minister of Health, Prince
Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi, were among those who visited Herbert Wigwe’s parents
condole with the family on Wednesday, as tributes continue to pour in.
