Professor Emeritus Biodun Jeyifo, a towering figure in
African literary scholarship, has passed away at the age of 80.
His death was confirmed on Wednesday by the President
of the Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL), Professor Andrew Haruna. In an
official statement, Haruna expressed deep regret over the loss of the
distinguished academic, noting that Jeyifo died on February 11, 2026.
Widely known as Professor BJ, Jeyifo built an
illustrious academic career that spanned decades. He began his teaching journey

He later held joint academic appointments at two
prestigious American institutions — Cornell University and Harvard University —
further cementing his global reputation as a scholar.
Jeyifo was celebrated for his extensive work in
African literature and drama, as well as his strong contributions to Marxist
