The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Rivers State
has intensified efforts to mobilise voters ahead of the 2027 general elections,
urging eligible residents, especially youths, to participate in the ongoing
voter registration exercise.
The call was made during the party’s first Youth
Congress Meeting held in Port Harcourt, where youth leaders from all 23 local
government areas gathered to discuss strategies for increasing voter
participation.
A major focus of the meeting was the need to encourage
eligible citizens to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs)
before the registration deadline.
Party officials stressed the importance of grassroots
sensitisation, urging youth leaders to educate residents in their communities
about the significance of voter registration and active participation in the
democratic process.
The party’s Non-Indigenes Coordinator, Prosper
Olleanya, also appealed to eligible voters to take advantage of the ongoing
registration exercise, describing it as a crucial step toward shaping the
future of governance.
Speaking at the event, the State Youth Leader of the
party, Tonwe Nelson, announced plans for a massive 500,000-man voter
sensitisation march scheduled for next week. According to him, the initiative
is aimed at boosting awareness and encouraging greater participation among
young people and other eligible voters across the state.
Meanwhile, the Governorship Candidate of the Nigeria
Democratic Congress in Rivers State, Dumo Lulu-Briggs, called on Nigerians to
take voter registration seriously. He disclosed that he had been confirmed as
the party’s governorship candidate and was awaiting his Certificate of Return.
Lulu-Briggs described voter registration as one of the
most effective democratic tools available to citizens seeking positive change
and accountable leadership.
With the voter registration deadline drawing closer,
party leaders pledged to sustain awareness campaigns and grassroots
mobilisation efforts throughout Rivers State to ensure more eligible voters are
registered and ready to participate in the 2027 elections.
