Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has
responded to former Anambra Governor Peter Obi's critical remarks about Nigeria
during a speech at Johns Hopkins University, accusing Obi of hypocrisy and a
poor legacy.
Sanwo-Olu expressed disappointment that Obi, during
his U.S. appearance, chose to speak negatively about Nigeria instead of
promoting a positive image. “True patriotism means marketing your country, not
de-marketing it abroad,” he said.
Addressing Obi’s claim that the current administration
is worsening poverty, Sanwo-Olu argued that Obi failed to tackle poverty during
his own tenure. “Peter Obi didn't build a single standalone school or hospital
in eight years, nor did he provide sustainable credit. Yet, under his watch,
Anambra’s poverty rate rose from 41.4% to 53.7%,” he stated.
In contrast, Sanwo-Olu highlighted President Bola
Tinubu’s achievements—over 200 schools built, loans to more than 200,000
students, and over $500 million in SME credit facilities. He added that Tinubu
reduced poverty in Lagos by over 46% during his governorship and is now
replicating those efforts nationally.
“Obi contributed to rising poverty. Tinubu has lifted
millions out of it. So, who really has the credibility to talk?” Sanwo-Olu
concluded.
