Nigeria defender Semi Ajayi was named Man of the Match
after a commanding performance that anchored the Super Eagles’ 2–1 victory over
Tanzania in their opening Group C fixture of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Ajayi delivered both defensive authority and attacking
impact, opening the scoring in the 36th minute with a towering header. Rising
highest above the Tanzanian defence, he powered home a precise cross from Alex
Iwobi to put Nigeria in front and set the tone for the contest.
Beyond his goal, the central defender was pivotal at
the back, producing a composed and assured display. He read danger early,
dominated aerial duels and effectively organised a Nigerian defence that faced
sustained pressure from a determined Tanzanian side looking to spring a
surprise.
Even after Tanzania drew level shortly after the
restart, Ajayi remained calm and influential, helping the Super Eagles regain
control during a tense spell in the game.
His performance was sealed by a series of vital
interceptions and clearances late on, as Tanzania pushed for a second equaliser
following Ademola Lookman’s fine strike that restored Nigeria’s lead.
The Man of the Match honour capped an outstanding
outing for Ajayi, whose influence extended well beyond his goal. It was his
second strike for the Super Eagles, following his earlier effort in a 2023
World Cup qualifier, further underlining his value as a reliable presence in
high-pressure encounters.
Nigeria’s narrow victory leaves them provisionally top
of Group C, and as the Super Eagles prepare for challenging fixtures against
Tunisia and Uganda, Ajayi’s assured display will provide encouragement that the
team’s defensive foundation is taking shape at a crucial stage of the
tournament.
