The Senate has commenced the screening of Professor
Joash Amupitan, President Bola Tinubu’s nominee for Chairman of
the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Tinubu’s request for Amupitan’s confirmation was
formally read on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio
during plenary on Tuesday. The communication, submitted in line with
constitutional provisions, sought the upper chamber’s approval for the
appointment.
The President had last Thursday presented
Amupitan’s name as his preferred choice to lead the electoral body, following
the exit of Mahmood Yakubu.
According to the Presidency, the Council of
State gave unanimous approval for the nomination during a recent
meeting attended by former heads of state and key political leaders.
Tinubu described the nominee as an “apolitical” and
principled figure, while Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo praised him
as a “man of integrity.”
Amupitan, 58,
a native of Kogi State, is a Professor of Law and Deputy
Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos (UNIJOS),
Plateau State. He is also the first person from Kogi State to be
nominated for the INEC chairmanship.
