Defending champions Senegal began their African
Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 title defense with a tense 1-0 win over Nigeria
on Tuesday evening, in what proved to be a dramatic Group D opener at the Amaan
Stadium in Zanzibar.
The only goal of the game came in the 75th minute,
when Christian Gomis capitalized on a swift counterattack to coolly
finish past Nigeria’s goalkeeper, sealing an important victory for the Lions of
Teranga and handing Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle his first defeat
in eight games.
A Battle of West African Titans
The match lived up to its billing as a clash between
two of West Africa’s most storied footballing nations. CHAN, which features
only players who compete in their respective national leagues, provided a
gritty, tactical encounter full of passion and physicality.
Senegal, winners of the 2022 edition in Algeria,
started the game on the front foot, but Nigeria — returning to CHAN finals
action for the first time since 2018 — responded aggressively, pressing high
and disrupting the champions’ rhythm.
Midfield duo Nduka Junior and Raymond
Tochukwu stood out for the Nigerians with early challenges that disrupted
Senegal’s build-up play, although both were booked in a heated first half where
chances were few.
Key Moments and Tactical Chess
Nigeria’s Sikiru Alimi had the best chance of
the opening half, drawing a strong save from Senegalese goalkeeper Marc
Diouf after a well-timed through ball. On the other side, Daouda Ba
and Moctar Koïté kept Nigeria’s backline alert with long-range efforts.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 75th minute.
Substitute Koïté made a surging run down the right flank and whipped in a
precise low cross, finding Gomis in space. The forward made no mistake,
slotting home with his left foot and sending Senegal’s bench into raptures.
Nigerian Response Falls Short
In response, Chelle threw on Vincent Temitope
and Godwin Obaje in an effort to salvage a draw. Temitope came close
late in the match with a powerful strike that narrowly missed the bottom
corner. Alimi and Jabbar Malik tried to create threats from set pieces,
but Senegal’s defence held firm.
Senegal’s central defenders, Seyni Ndiaye and Joseph
Layousse, were commanding throughout the second half, cutting out crosses
and winning crucial aerial duels to preserve the lead.
As the clock ticked down, tempers flared again. A late
handball by Shola Adelani deep in injury time ended any realistic hopes
of a Nigerian equaliser, and referee Jean-Claude Makouta soon blew the
final whistle to confirm Senegal’s win.
Post-Match Reactions
Coach Éric Chelle remained composed in his post-match
comments, refusing to panic. “It’s only the first game,” he said. “We take each
game as it comes. We still have matches against Congo and Sudan —
everything is still to play for.”
Senegal’s coach Souleymane Diallo, who had
previously downplayed the pressure of defending their title, praised his squad
for their discipline and focus.
“This was never going to be easy,” Diallo said.
“Nigeria are a strong team, but we remained compact and took our chance. That’s
what champions do.”
What It Means
Senegal now top Group D and extend their impressive
CHAN record against fellow West African sides. Interestingly, the result marks
their sixth 1-0 win in CHAN history, underlining their reputation for
tactical discipline and defensive efficiency.
Nigeria, on the other hand, must regroup quickly. With
only two group-stage games remaining, the Super Eagles will need positive
results against Congo and Sudan to stay in contention for the quarter-finals.
The 2024 CHAN continues this week with more
action across all groups, as teams jostle for supremacy in Africa’s premier
home-based football tournament.
