When the Super Eagles of Nigeria face South Africa’s Bafana
Bafana at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Tuesday, it will be more
than just another chapter in their heated rivalry. At stake is a crucial
lifeline in the race to secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United
States, Canada, and Mexico.
Super Eagles’ Struggles
Nigeria’s campaign has been far from convincing. After seven
matches, the Super Eagles sit third in Group C with 10 points, six points
adrift of leaders South Africa, with only three games left to play. Benin
Republic are second with 11 points.
To keep their qualification hopes alive, Nigeria must win in
Bloemfontein. A draw could also suffice, but only if South Africa falter in one
of their remaining matches. The Eagles may yet benefit from a FIFA ruling,
should South Africa be docked three points for allegedly fielding an ineligible
player against Lesotho earlier in March 2025.
On Saturday, Nigeria narrowly edged Rwanda thanks to a Tolu
Arokodare goal, while South Africa cruised past Lesotho to tighten their grip
on the group.
Rivalry and Head-to-Head
Nigeria and South Africa’s rivalry has been a consistent
source of drama. Their most recent clash ended in a draw in Nigeria, and the
reverse fixture comes against the backdrop of South Africa’s three-game
unbeaten home run in World Cup qualifiers.
The Super Eagles, however, hold the historical edge. They
knocked South Africa out on penalties in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, and
also secured victory at the 2019 AFCON. Yet, their last three encounters have
all ended 1-1 after regulation time, underscoring how evenly matched the teams
have become.
Injury Concerns
Nigeria will be without their talisman Victor Osimhen, who
limped off against Rwanda and did not travel with the squad. His absence is a
major setback for Finidi George’s men, though the team otherwise boasts a full
complement of players.
South Africa will also be missing right-back Nyiko Mobbie due
to injury, with Thabiso Monyane called up as his replacement.

The Big Question
As the two African heavyweights square off, the stakes could
not be higher. Can the Super Eagles dig deep, overcome Osimhen’s absence, and
reignite their World Cup qualification campaign? Or will Bafana Bafana tighten
their grip and edge closer to a ticket to North America?
Only 90 minutes will provide the answer.
