In a dramatic and unprecedented political shake-up,
South Korea’s conservative People Power Party (PPP) has annulled its recent
presidential primary and replaced its nominee, Kim Moon Soo, with former Prime
Minister Han Duck-soo.
The announcement, made just a week after Kim’s initial
selection, adds to the party’s internal strife ahead of the crucial June 3
presidential by-election.
Saturday’s decision, which Kim has condemned as an
“overnight political coup,” highlights the growing instability within the party
following the removal of former President Yoon Suk Yeol. Yoon was ousted amid
widespread backlash over his controversial attempt to impose martial law last
December.
The leadership’s swift move to install Han Duck-soo as
the new standard-bearer appears to be a desperate attempt to restore public
confidence and unity within the party ranks. However, the abrupt reversal has
sparked outrage among party members and supporters of Kim, raising questions
about transparency and governance within the PPP.
Political analysts say the internal discord threatens
to derail the party’s chances in the upcoming election, as the opposition seeks
to capitalize on the chaos and present a more unified front to the electorate.
The by-election was triggered by Yoon’s impeachment
and marks a critical test for the conservative bloc as it tries to recover from
one of the most turbulent periods in its recent history.
