President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced new
energy reform plans aimed at tackling Nigeria’s persistent electricity
challenges in hospitals, stressing that reliable power is critical to saving
lives and improving healthcare delivery.
Speaking at the National Stakeholders Dialogue on
Power in the Health Sector in Abuja on Tuesday, Tinubu warned that power
shortages in health facilities continue to compromise patient safety, disrupt
medical care, and drive up costs.
“In surgical theatres, maternity wards, intensive care
units, laboratories, and emergency rooms across the country, power outages too
often compromise safety, interrupt care, and cost lives. These outages cannot
continue. Lives are at stake. We must act now,” the President declared.
Reliable Power as a Cornerstone of
Healthcare
The two-day dialogue, jointly organised by the Federal
Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Federal Ministry of Power,
brought together policymakers, development partners, and private sector leaders
to address electricity shortages in healthcare institutions.
Tinubu described sustainable and cost-effective
electricity access as a “cornerstone of modern healthcare,” central to
delivering quality services and strengthening Nigeria’s health system.
Renewed Hope Agenda for Health Sector
Reform
The President said the hospital energy reform
programme is part of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, designed
to address energy poverty through decentralized, innovative, and
private-sector-led solutions.
He noted that the plan aligns with Nigeria’s Energy
Transition Plan and power sector reforms, anchored on sustainability,
innovation, and inclusivity. Key priorities include:
1.
Expanding off-grid solar and hybrid
systems for hospitals and critical public infrastructure;
2.
Incentivising private sector
participation through supportive policies and fiscal measures;
3.
Promoting public-private partnerships
(PPPs) for sustainable energy deployment;
4.
Leveraging blended financing to
attract investments from development partners and financiers;
5.
Ensuring efficient resource management,
from protecting installations to recovering investment capital.
A Call for Action and Collaboration
Tinubu emphasised that the stakeholders’ dialogue must
serve as a platform for collaborative action rather than mere
discussions. He thanked development partners for their support and urged
continued investment in scalable, inclusive energy-health solutions.
He also called on investors to take advantage of
opportunities in Nigeria’s health, energy, and infrastructure sectors,
assuring them of a conducive business environment and clear frameworks for
returns.
To hospital administrators, Tinubu appealed for a
shift away from short-term fixes toward sustainable, community-owned energy
systems that ensure uninterrupted healthcare delivery.
