The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has
filed a lawsuit against Harvard University, accusing the institution of failing
to protect Jewish and Israeli students on campus.
In a complaint submitted to a federal court in Boston,
the U.S. Department of Justice alleged that Harvard was deliberately
indifferent to hostility directed at these students and failed to enforce its
policies when they were affected.
The lawsuit claims that such actions effectively
excluded Jewish and Israeli students and denied them equal access to
educational opportunities.
The government is seeking to recover billions of
dollars in taxpayer funds, intensifying pressure on the university.
Harvard had not issued an immediate response to the
legal action at the time of filing.
The lawsuit comes shortly after the administration
reportedly pushed for a financial settlement with the university over its
policies, with earlier demands said to have reached up to $1 billion.
It also follows a separate case filed in February, in
which the government accused Harvard of failing to cooperate with a federal
investigation and sought documents related to whether race was considered in
its admissions process.
