The race for Europe’s most prestigious club prize
heats up this week as the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals get underway.
Four enticing first-leg fixtures will take center
stage on Tuesday, April 8 and Wednesday, April 9, with Arsenal welcoming Real
Madrid, Aston Villa heading to Paris, Bayern hosting Inter Milan, and Barcelona
traveling to Borussia Dortmund.
Arsenal vs Real Madrid: Saka’s Return Boosts Gunners
With domestic silverware slipping from their grasp,
Arsenal’s best hope for glory lies in Europe. Sitting second in the Premier
League and eliminated from the FA Cup, the Gunners now focus on a high-stakes
clash against 14-time European champions Real Madrid.
This marks only the third ever meeting between the two
giants, with Arsenal famously knocking Madrid out in the 2005/06 round of 16.
Manager Mikel Arteta will be buoyed by the return of Bukayo Saka, who scored on
his comeback against Fulham after a lengthy hamstring layoff. “He lifted the
stadium and the energy – it is great to have him back,” Arteta said.
Madrid, however, remain a formidable force. After
edging Atlético Madrid in a dramatic round of 16 tie, coach Carlo Ancelotti
praised his squad’s resilience: “This team has something special – character
and commitment.”
Stat Watch: Real Madrid have won all four of their
previous UEFA quarter-final matches played in London.
Bayern Munich vs Inter Milan: Pavard Reunion Adds
Spice to Rematch
Final hosts Bayern Munich will look to assert
dominance once again over Inter Milan, having defeated the Italian side twice
in the 2022/23 group stage. This time, however, Inter arrive as Serie A
leaders, eager to rewrite history.
Former Bayern defender Benjamin Pavard, now with
Inter, admitted to a mix of emotions ahead of his return to Munich. “I’m glad
to meet Bayern again,” he said. Inter coach Simone Inzaghi added, “It will be
difficult, but we will play the games as we have done so far.”
With Harry Kane back in scoring form and Thomas Müller
eyeing one last Champions League push before his summer exit, Bayern remain
heavyweights. Still, Inter will draw on their past – including their 2-0
triumph over Bayern in the 2010 final.
Did You Know? Inter were unbeaten in four previous
visits to Munich before their most recent 2-0 defeat.
Paris Saint-Germain vs Aston Villa: European Debutants
Set for Parisian Test
Fresh from eliminating Liverpool in a dramatic penalty
shootout, Paris Saint-Germain welcome Aston Villa in their first-ever European
meeting. Villa, making their Champions League debut, face a daunting task
against a PSG side brimming with confidence under Luis Enrique.
“We’re in the quarter-finals and need to be ready for
another difficult tie,” PSG captain Marquinhos warned. Villa manager Unai Emery
returns to familiar ground, having previously coached PSG to multiple domestic
titles between 2016 and 2018.
Defender Ian Maatsen is optimistic: “They’re a great
team, but we’re a great team too. They will have to respect us as much as we
respect them.”
Trivia: Aston Villa last reached the quarter-finals of
the European Cup in 1983, 41 years ago.
Borussia Dortmund vs Barcelona: Lewandowski Returns,
Raphinha Shines
Barcelona face a stern test in Dortmund, though they
already edged BVB 3-2 earlier this season in the group stage. Former Dortmund
striker Robert Lewandowski will once again line up against his old club, but
it’s Raphinha who has stolen the spotlight, leading the tournament with 11
goals.
Dortmund, now under new manager Niko Kova?, hope to
change their fortunes against the Catalan giants. “He was my assistant,” Kova?
recalled of Barcelona boss Hansi Flick from their Bayern days. “Now we’re
opponents.”
By the Numbers: Dortmund are winless in five meetings
with Barcelona (D2 L3).
