The University of Ghana Stadium has been temporarily
closed for renovations in preparation for the CAF African Schools Football
Championship, set to take place from April 21 to April 26, 2025.
Initially, the preliminary rounds were planned for the
Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, with the University of Ghana
Stadium hosting the finals. However, a change in arrangements has led to venue
adjustments for the tournament.
The stadium closure has also affected local football,
prompting Hearts of Oak to relocate their Ghana Premier League match against
Nations FC to the Tuba Astroturf.
The championship’s zonal qualifiers, held between
October 2024 and January 2025, featured school teams from 46 countries
competing in the 2024-2025 season. The final stage will bring together the
winners of the 2023-2024 boys' and girls' categories, along with champions from
CAF’s six zones and host nation Ghana.
A total prize pool of $650,000 has been allocated,
with the championship-winning school earning $300,000. The runner-up will
receive $200,000, while the third-place finisher will take home $150,000.
Launched in April 2022, the CAF African Schools
Football Championship was previously hosted by South Africa in 2023 and
Tanzania in 2024. Ghana will become the first West African country to host the
tournament.
