Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike
has called on the people of Rivers State to continue supporting President Bola
Ahmed Tinubu, citing what he described as significant benefits and
opportunities the state has received under the current administration.
Wike made the remarks on Saturday in Port Harcourt
during a luncheon organised by the Rainbow Coalition for candidates contesting
upcoming governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly elections in
Rivers State.
The former Rivers State governor urged residents to
objectively assess the gains recorded by the state since Tinubu assumed office
and compare them with what was achieved under previous administrations.
According to him, Rivers State has enjoyed notable
federal appointments, opportunities, and recognition within less than three
years of the current government, which he said justifies continued support for
the President.
Wike stressed that politics should be driven by
performance and development rather than ethnic or sectional sentiments,
insisting that leaders should be judged based on their contributions to the
welfare of the people.
Addressing party supporters, the minister emphasized
the importance of grassroots political engagement, noting that electoral
victories are determined at polling units rather than through media appearances
or public relations campaigns.
He urged members of the Rainbow Coalition to focus on
mobilising voters at the ward and local government levels, arguing that
effective grassroots organisation remains the key to electoral success.
Wike also expressed confidence in the political
influence of the coalition, describing it as a dominant force that would shape
the future of politics in Rivers State.
He invited politicians from different political
backgrounds to join the coalition, stating that anyone seeking political
relevance or elective office in the state should align with the group.
The minister further warned against attempts to
destabilise Rivers State, maintaining that residents would resist any effort
aimed at undermining the interests and political stability of the state.
While describing Rivers people as peaceful, he
cautioned against taking their calm disposition for weakness, adding that the
state would continue to protect its political and developmental interests.
In a conciliatory gesture, Wike extended an olive
branch to aggrieved politicians and former allies, encouraging them to return
and work with the coalition for the progress of Rivers State.
He assured them that there was room for reconciliation
and unity, provided they were committed to advancing the collective interests
of the state.
Reiterating his stance on leadership, Wike said
competence, vision, and commitment to public service should remain the primary
considerations when choosing political leaders, rather than ethnicity or
religious affiliation.
The event was attended by several political figures,
including candidates from multiple political parties, highlighting the
coalition’s efforts to build a broad political alliance ahead of future
elections.
