Florian Wirtz scored his first Liverpool goal as the
Reds edged Wolves 2–1 in an emotional Premier League encounter at Anfield, a
result that lifted Arne Slot’s side into the top four.
The match was played against a poignant backdrop as
both clubs paid tribute to former forward Diogo Jota, who tragically died
alongside his brother Andre Silva in a car accident in July. Jota, who joined
Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, won four major trophies during his time at
Anfield.
His two children led the teams out as mascots, while
his wife, Rute Cardoso, watched from the touchline. Fans from both sides joined
together to chant Jota’s name in the 18th and 20th minutes, marking the shirt
numbers he wore for Wolves and Liverpool respectively.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised the show of unity
and respect, describing the scenes as “special” and deeply emotional for
everyone involved.
On the pitch, Liverpool delivered just enough to
secure all three points despite another nervy second-half display. Wolves,
rooted near the bottom of the table with just two points from 18 matches,
showed fight after the break but ultimately fell short.
Ryan Gravenberch opened the scoring shortly before
half-time, firing home from Jeremie Frimpong’s cross. Wirtz then doubled the
advantage moments later, prodding in Hugo Ekitike’s pass to finally open his
Liverpool account on his 23rd appearance.
The £100 million signing from Bayer Leverkusen has
been under growing pressure following the season-ending injury to Alexander
Isak, and Slot highlighted Wirtz’s overall influence beyond just the goal.
Wolves pulled one back early in the second half
through Santiago Bueno, once again exposing Liverpool’s vulnerability at
set-pieces. The visitors pressed for an equaliser and went close late on, only
for Conor Bradley to make a crucial last-ditch tackle to preserve the win.
Though far from convincing, the victory continues
Liverpool’s recent upturn in form and keeps them firmly in the hunt at the top
end of the Premier League table.
