Ollie Watkins made a decisive impact from the bench as Aston Villa strengthened their surprise Premier League title push with a 2–1 comeback victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The England striker, who had managed just three league goals all season, struck twice in the second half after being introduced by manager Unai Emery, sealing Villa’s 11th straight league win.

The result lifts third-placed Villa to within three points of leaders Arsenal, whom they face in a crucial clash on Tuesday. Chelsea, meanwhile, slipped further in the title race, dropping to fifth after winning just one of their last six league matches.

Despite their struggles, Chelsea dominated the first half and went into the break with a deserved lead. Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernández both went close early on as the hosts controlled possession and penned Villa back.

The breakthrough arrived in the 37th minute when Reece James’ inswinging corner glanced off João Pedro’s leg and crept past a stranded Emiliano Martínez. It was the Brazilian’s second goal in as many games, following his strike in last weekend’s draw at Newcastle.

Villa struggled to gain momentum before the interval, but Emery transformed the game with a triple substitution just after the hour mark, introducing Watkins, Jadon Sancho and Amadou Onana.

The change paid off almost immediately. Watkins burst between Chelsea’s centre-backs to equalise, with his initial effort saved by Robert Sánchez before the rebound ricocheted off the striker and in off the post.

Villa grew in confidence as Chelsea faded. Sánchez was forced into further saves to deny Boubacar Kamara and Ian Maatsen, but the pressure eventually told.

Watkins completed the turnaround by rising highest to power home a header from a Youri Tielemans corner, sparking wild celebrations among the travelling supporters and matching Villa’s best winning run since 1914.

The victory also opens a 10-point gap between Villa and Chelsea in the race for Champions League qualification, underlining Emery’s side as genuine contenders at the business end of the season.
