The 1999 constitution has been the most tested constitution Nigeria has ever had. The Judiciary has given several landmark judgements on topical issues that the constitution has thrown up.
There is a need for an urgent review of the present constitution. President after Presidents have exploited the loopholes in the constitution to their advantage.
A constitution that gives so much power to the president is a constitution that breeds dictators as leaders'.
There is an urgent need for the national assembly to diligently look into some of these loopholes to safeguard the nation from a power-hungry president.
Nigeria is a nation whose composing units are constantly agitating. The present constitution has not been able to solve these agitations.
The best legacy any president can leave behind is to give the country a new constitution that reflects the yearnings of all ethnic nationalities. Nigeria is not the most multi-ethnic country in the world, what can we learn as a nation from other nations that have overcome their multi-ethnic challenges?
I strongly believe that the 1999 constitution cannot take Nigeria to the promised land. There is an urgent need for a progressive, people driven constitution that reflects the modern realities of Nigerians.
