Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara
Zulum, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to restoring the
dignity and livelihoods of victims of insurgency, including thousands of
Nigerian refugees living in Cameroon, Chad, and Niger Republic.
The governor gave the assurance on Sunday during a
visit to Minawao Refugee Camp in Cameroon’s Far North region, where over
12,000 Nigerian refugees — mostly from Kirawa, Ngoshe, Ashigashiya and
neighbouring communities in Gwoza Local Government Area — have lived for more
than ten years.
“Your Return Home Is Now a Priority” —
Zulum
Addressing the refugees, Zulum said his visit was part
of deliberate efforts to repatriate the remaining Nigerians who wish to return.
His presence sparked visible relief and hope among the refugees, many of whom
described the moment as their “first real assurance” of finally going back
home.
He informed the refugees that their communities are
now safer due to intensified military operations, the establishment of civilian
security outfits, and the gradual restoration of civil authority across Gwoza
and other parts of Borno.
“The welfare of refugees, internally displaced persons
and returnees remains a priority for us,” Zulum said.
“Rebuilding the lives of insurgency survivors is central to our humanitarian
and development agenda.”

As part of measures to support voluntary returnees,
Governor Zulum announced financial assistance for rebuilding and resettlement:
These measures, he explained, will help families
restart their lives with dignity and a sense of stability.
Cameroon Commends Zulum’s Consistent
Support
Governor of Cameroon’s Far North Region, Mijinyawa
Bakari, commended Zulum’s unwavering dedication to displaced Nigerians,
describing his leadership as “exemplary and deeply humanitarian.”
“Zulum has consistently demonstrated genuine concern
for his people, even beyond Nigeria’s borders,” Bakari said.
“His continued interventions in Minawao Camp have strengthened cooperation
between both countries in managing displacement and promoting regional
stability.”
Agricultural Support for Refugee Farmers
During the visit, Zulum also inspected farmlands
allocated to refugees by the Cameroonian authorities. The governor praised
their resilience and promised additional agricultural support, including
irrigation equipment and water sources to enhance productivity.
“Empowering refugees to maintain their livelihoods is
central to restoring dignity and ensuring a smooth transition back into their
communities,” he added.
