Alexander Zverev continued his impressive run at the
China Open on Saturday, racing into the quarter-finals with a commanding
victory that set up a highly anticipated meeting with Novak Djokovic.
The German top seed needed only 55 minutes to defeat
Chinese wildcard Zhang Zhizhen, ranked 250th in the world, as he powered his
way through the match with nine aces.
Zverev, currently ranked second in the world, praised
his opponent after the victory, describing the 21-year-old as a dangerous
player who had little pressure on him.
The German will now face Djokovic on Sunday, with the
Serbian aiming to maintain his perfect record in Beijing.
Zverev is also using the tournament as an opportunity
to close the gap on world number one Jannik Sinner. The Italian, who won the
China Open last year, is absent from this year's competition and has also
confirmed that he will not participate in next week's Shanghai Masters.
Zverev admitted that becoming world number one remains
one of his ambitions but said his immediate priority was the difficult
quarter-final against Djokovic.
In the other men's quarter-final results, third seed
Daniil Medvedev advanced after beating Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 6-3.
Medvedev will face Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo in the last eight.
Fifth seed Alex de Minaur and Andrey Rublev also
progressed after three-set victories and will meet in another quarter-final.
Rybakina Falls to World No.118
The biggest upset in the women's draw came when newly
crowned world number one Elena Rybakina was eliminated by 118th-ranked Alina
Charaeva.
Rybakina, playing her first tournament match since
winning the US Open and moving to the top of the rankings, appeared on course
for victory after taking the opening set.
However, Charaeva fought back strongly to claim a 3-6,
6-4, 6-3 victory and reach the third round in Beijing.
The 24-year-old, competing at the China Open for the
first time, described the result as a dream moment after defeating one of the
leading players in women's tennis.
Rybakina struggled with her serve throughout the
contest, producing seven double faults, while also revealing afterward that she
had been dealing with a foot problem.
The Kazakh player said she plans to take a week away
from competition to recover before returning for the remainder of the season.
Charaeva will face Britain's Sonay Kartal in the next
round.
Gauff Survives Osorio Test
Fourth seed Coco Gauff also advanced, although the
American had to work hard to overcome Colombia's Camila Osorio.
Gauff eventually prevailed 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-2 despite
an inconsistent serving performance.
She will meet Chinese teenager Sun Xinran in the third
round after the 582nd-ranked player defeated Spain's Cristina Bucsa 6-4, 7-5.
Sixth seed Elina Svitolina and former champion Iga
Swiatek, the eighth seed, also booked their places in the next round.
Zheng Calls for Calm From Fans
Home favourite Zheng Qinwen also progressed, although
her second-round match against Anna Kalinskaya ended prematurely when the
Russian retired with an injury.
Zheng eventually secured a 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 3-0 victory
after more than two hours of play.
The Olympic champion was visibly frustrated by the
behaviour of some spectators during the opening-set tie-break and was twice
heard asking fans to stop shouting as she prepared to serve.
The umpire also intervened and warned spectators about
moving around during points.
Zheng later admitted that the atmosphere affected her
concentration but said she would work on handling the pressure better.
She will face Czech Republic's Marie Bouzkova in the
third round.
