Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has firmly
stated that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume,
cannot determine his political future or that of the state ahead of the 2027
governorship election.
The governor emphasized that his chances of securing a
second term would depend solely on the will of the people, driven by his
performance, pedigree, and track record in office.
This position was conveyed through his Chief Press
Secretary, Tersoo Kula, in response to remarks by Senator Titus Zam, who
suggested that Benue residents would take direction from Akume in 2027.
Kula described the statement as an insult to the
intelligence and political awareness of the Benue electorate, insisting that
the people are now more enlightened and capable of making independent
decisions.
“No individual will decide the fate of Benue people in
2027. The people will collectively decide based on performance and
credibility,” he said.
He further stressed that political loyalty to
individuals should not override accountability to the people, warning that
leaders who fail to deliver on their mandate would be judged at the polls.
According to him, Governor Alia remains focused on
fulfilling his promises to the people, adding that voters are fully aware of
ongoing developments in the state and will make their decision accordingly.
Kula also dismissed the notion that Akume holds the
power to influence the outcome of the election, stating that such a belief
undermines the democratic process.
Meanwhile, Senator Zam, speaking during an empowerment
programme in Wannune—Akume’s hometown—reaffirmed his loyalty to the SGF,
pledging not to disappoint him.
“I will not humiliate or disappoint Akume like
Governor Hyacinth Alia,” Zam stated.
The exchange highlights growing political tensions in
Benue State as early alignments and rivalries begin to shape the race toward
the 2027 elections.
