FC Barcelona secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over
Rayo Vallecano at Camp Nou, with a first-half header from Ronald Araujo proving
decisive.
The only goal of the match came in the 24th minute
when Araujo powered home a corner delivered by Joao Cancelo, giving Barcelona a
crucial lead heading into the international break.
Despite the win, it was goalkeeper Joan Garcia who
emerged as the standout performer, producing a series of brilliant saves to
deny Rayo an equaliser.
“We knew how important it was to get this win… but we
suffered more than we would have liked,” Garcia admitted after the match.
Barcelona, coached by Hansi Flick, struggled to
maintain control, especially in the second half as Rayo Vallecano piled on
pressure.
Garcia made early interventions to deny Carlos Martin,
before going on to stop efforts from Alvaro Garcia and Unai Lopez in a dominant
spell from the visitors.
Barcelona also had chances to extend their lead, but
Raphinha was wasteful in front of goal, missing multiple opportunities despite
being set up by Lamine Yamal.
Rayo Vallecano came closest through Pacha Espino, who
broke through Barcelona’s defence but curled his effort over the bar.
In the closing stages, Garcia continued his heroics by
denying Jorge de Frutos, ensuring Barcelona held on through six minutes of
stoppage time.
Rayo coach Inigo Perez praised his side’s second-half
display but admitted they lacked the finishing touch.
“The second half was perfect, but we lacked the goal…
Garcia made the difference at key moments,” he said.
The victory keeps Barcelona firmly on track, although
their performance highlighted areas needing improvement despite securing all
three points.
