Manchester City claimed their ninth League Cup title
with a commanding 2-0 victory over Arsenal FC at Wembley, with goalkeeper
errors proving decisive in the final.
The turning point came in the second half when Arsenal
goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga made a costly mistake, allowing Rayan Cherki’s
cross to slip through his hands. Nico O'Reilly reacted quickest to head home
and give City the lead.
Just four minutes later, O’Reilly struck again,
sealing the victory and handing City boss Pep Guardiola a record fifth League
Cup triumph.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had taken a gamble by
starting Kepa ahead of first-choice goalkeeper David Raya — a decision that
ultimately backfired.
The Spaniard’s difficult history in League Cup finals
resurfaced, having previously endured disappointment with Chelsea in both 2019
and 2022.
Despite a bright start, Arsenal failed to capitalize
on early chances, with City goalkeeper James Trafford producing a remarkable
triple save to deny Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka.
City improved significantly after the break,
dominating possession and creating sustained pressure. Their persistence paid
off when Kepa’s error gifted them the opener, before Matheus Nunes’ assist
allowed O’Reilly to double the advantage with a powerful header.
The defeat ends Arsenal’s hopes of securing a first
trophy since the 2020 FA Cup and brings their pursuit of a historic quadruple
to an abrupt halt.
For City, the victory comes as a major boost following
their recent Champions League exit, and could serve as momentum in their
pursuit of the Premier League leaders.
Guardiola’s emotional celebration at full-time
reflected the significance of the triumph — his 15th major trophy with the club
— as City ended their silverware drought in style.
