Chelsea Football Club have reportedly reached a full
agreement to appoint Xabi Alonso as their new manager.
According to reports from *The Athletic*, Alonso has
accepted the chance to take charge at Stamford Bridge after visiting London
earlier this month. A four-year contract is now being finalised, with an
official announcement expected soon.
The move follows the departure of Liam Rosenior, who
left the club in April after a poor run of results, including five straight
Premier League defeats.
Chelsea’s hierarchy had carried out a detailed search
for a new manager, with former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola also seriously
considered for the position. However, the club eventually moved forward with
negotiations for Alonso.
The 44-year-old Spanish coach has been available since
leaving Real Madrid in January, less than a year into a three-year deal at the
Santiago Bernabéu.
Before his short spell in Spain, Alonso made history
in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen. He led the club to their first-ever
Bundesliga title during the 2023/24 season, completing the domestic campaign
unbeaten.
His expected appointment will mark a return to English
football, where he previously enjoyed a successful playing career with
Liverpool. Alonso spent five years at Anfield and was part of the Liverpool
team that won the UEFA Champions League in 2005.
Chelsea are currently under interim management, and
Alonso is expected to lead a major rebuild at Stamford Bridge.
The club will be hoping his arrival can restore
stability and help Chelsea return to competing strongly in the Premier League
and across Europe.
