Chelsea FC saw their hopes of qualifying for next
season’s Champions League take a major hit after a disappointing 3-0 defeat to
Everton FC on Saturday.
The loss caps off a difficult week for manager Liam
Rosenior, whose side had already been knocked out of Europe following a heavy
aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
Everton delivered a dominant performance, with Beto
scoring twice to put the hosts firmly in control, before Iliman Ndiaye sealed
the emphatic win with a brilliant finish.
The breakthrough came in the 33rd minute when James
Garner set up Beto with a superb pass, allowing him to beat Chelsea goalkeeper
Robert Sanchez.
Chelsea had a chance to respond, but Everton’s
goalkeeper Jordan Pickford produced a stunning save to deny Enzo Fernandez.
The Blues’ problems deepened after halftime when
Sanchez made a costly error, allowing Beto’s shot to slip through his legs for
the second goal.
Beto then turned provider, winning an aerial duel
before setting up Ndiaye, who powered a clinical strike into the top corner to
complete Everton’s biggest home win of the season.
The defeat marks Chelsea’s fourth consecutive loss,
leaving them sixth on the table, just two points ahead of Everton, who now sit
seventh and firmly in the race for a top-five finish.
With tough fixtures against Manchester City,
Manchester United, and Liverpool FC still to come, Chelsea face an uphill
battle to secure Champions League qualification.
Meanwhile, Everton continue to build momentum at their
new home ground and are set for a historic Merseyside derby clash against
Liverpool on April 19.
