Google’s artificial intelligence assistant, Gemini,
has surpassed one billion monthly users, marking a major milestone for the
technology giant as competition in the global AI market intensifies.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the achievement on
Tuesday, describing Gemini as the company’s fastest-growing product and the
14th Google product to reach the one-billion-user milestone.
“It’s our fastest growing product ever,” Pichai said
in a social media post.
Google said the figure was calculated based on the
number of people using the Gemini app across its ecosystem, giving the company
a significant advantage as it continues to integrate artificial intelligence
into its major platforms and services.
The milestone comes shortly after Google announced a
major reorganisation of its AI division. Demis Hassabis, who leads Google
DeepMind and was recently awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, has stepped
back from the laboratory’s day-to-day management.
Several prominent researchers have also departed the
company, including Jeff Dean, a key figure in Google’s engineering operations
for nearly three decades.
Meanwhile, Google’s next flagship AI model, Gemini 3.5
Pro, which was initially expected to launch in June, has yet to be released.
The delay comes as competitors continue to introduce
increasingly advanced AI models, particularly in computer coding, which has
emerged as one of the most commercially valuable areas of generative artificial
intelligence.
Despite concerns about falling behind some rivals in
AI capabilities, Google retains a major advantage through its enormous user
base and extensive digital ecosystem.
The company has continued incorporating AI-powered
features into services including Google Search, Gmail, Google Maps and YouTube,
allowing Gemini to reach users across multiple platforms.
Competition Intensifies
Google’s milestone comes amid increasingly fierce
competition from OpenAI, Anthropic and China’s DeepSeek.
OpenAI announced in July that it had reached one
billion users across its various products and interfaces, led by ChatGPT,
although the company did not clarify whether the figure represented monthly or
weekly users.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT, launched as a free application in
November 2022, played a major role in triggering the current global artificial
intelligence boom and built its massive user base in less than four years.
The size and engagement of AI platforms have also
become increasingly important as companies compete for investment and higher
valuations.
OpenAI, which filed a confidential application for an
initial public offering in June, is expected to rely heavily on its expanding
user base and commercial growth as it prepares for a potential public listing.
However, competition is putting pressure on market
leaders. Research firm Sensor Tower estimated that ChatGPT’s share of the AI
assistant market fell below 50 per cent during the first half of the year as
rivals such as Gemini, DeepSeek and Anthropic’s Claude gained ground.
With Gemini now reaching one billion monthly users,
Google appears to be strengthening its position in the rapidly evolving AI
assistant market, even as the company faces pressure to maintain its
technological edge over increasingly capable competitors.
